Environmental Protection Society (EPS) is a non-governmental organization (NGO). Since its inception in 1991 till 1997 its main activities and projects were concentrated in District Swat. The Society earned a good name and started its journey towards professionalism as well and extended its interventions to the districts of Upper Dir, Lower Dir, Buner, Shangla, and Malakand Agency where EPS had already developed good working relations with most of the organizations and departments of these areas. The Society maintained the tempo of work till 2008, when the Executive Board of the Society took the decision to expand EPS area of operation and work for the uplift of other areas through out the country and establish a new office in Islamabad. Due to the man induced complex disaster, Malakand Division, specifically District Swat confronted with a lot of damages and more than 2.5 million people displaced from their place of origin. On July 20, 2009 some of the areas of Malakand Division were declared safe by the concerned line agencies and the early stage of recovery initiated. EPS temporally closed its Islamabad Office and focused on Malakand Division to play its due role for the uplift of the area.

Founded in 1991, EPS was registered in 1994 under the Societies Registration Act, 1860. It is a non-profit and non-ethnic organization concerned with the physical, social and cultural environment of the Country.

Units

The units of EPS were also changed in light of the emerging realities of the organization. There were four units in the past, three among which were retained while two more were created for effectiveness of the organization. The three units retained are Finance and Administrative Unit, Technical Unit, Research and Publication Unit. The newly formed units are; Monitoring and Evaluation Unit and Human Resource Unit.

Finance and Administration Unit

This unit looks after the day-to-day administrative affairs of the Society and manages its finances. It has two sections, administrative and finance headed by administrative and finance managers with support staff.

Monitoring and Evaluation Unit

This unit monitors and evaluates the projects, events and campaigns of EPS to keep the activities on track. Reports produced are shared with the project staff and donors. It is headed by M&E Coordinator with support staff.

Human Resource Unit

This unit is meant to look after the human resource of the organization and to capacitate the Community Based Organizations in their endeavors for sustainable development. The Unit was established in 1997 with the support of CHIP Islamabad. Since 2002 EPS retained the Unit and continued the tempo of work without any external support. Beside free trainings for the CBOs linked with EPS this unit also imparts trainings on payment to CBOs formed by other projects/NGOs on demand. This unit is headed by Human Resource Coordinator.

Technical Unit

This unit provides input to the projects of EPS and to CBOs initiatives in topographic surveys, low cost designs and estimates for any physical improvement beneficial to the community. The unit was established with the financial support of Water Aid UK in 1998. In 2002 when the agreement of partnership concluded, EPS retained the unit within its resources and kept the unit functional with improved pace of work. During 2005 the Council decided to commercialize the unit for general public for stream lining the physical growth and resource generation for the Society.

Research and Publication

This unit manages publications and Area Resource Center of the Society alongwith student’s researches. Udyana Today is the regular publication of the Society since 1994. All the brochures, pamphlets, posters and reports are prepared by this unit. In addition it looks after the researches of the Society through students or consultants.
