Project on “Water Sanitation Hygiene (WASH) Component.”
Background of the Project:
Handicap International (HI) is currently implementing a project funded by European Commission Directorate General for Humanitarian Aid (ECHO).In this project HI and Environmental Protection Society (EPS) are working jointly on WASH component in District Swat and Buner.
The rationale behind the project is to reduce the suffering of socially excluded and marginalized community such as Persons with Disability (PWD) and Elder Persons due their physical and material incapacities.
The project is aimed to improve the access to basic relief and health services for affected population with particular focus on Persons with Disability (PWD), Persons with Injuries (PWI) and Elder Persons.
Working jointly both the organizations ensure that 300 accessible latrines and 100 bathing places are constructed or modified in both the target areas (Swat and Buner) and also the capacity is built on Accessible WASH construction.
Project Action Plan:
The project is aimed at to provide accessible latrines and bathing places to PWDs and PWIs and elderly persons. To achieve the objective a Project Action Plan (PAP) was prepared to ensure the provision of facilities on time. Many Activities and Actions under the project are given as under:
·         Capacity building of EPS staff on accessibility and mainstream disability.
·         Carrying out of identification and need assessment of the target beneficiaries.
·         Mass orientation workshop at District Swat and Buner.
·         Formation of Village Support Groups (VSGs).
·         Capacity building of VSGs on the rights of PWDs and accessibility.
·         Identification of players for Crash Training.
·         Crash training for connector organizations working in the same area.
·         Capacitating HI staff on Health Hygiene promotion.
·         Pre and Post KAP (Knowledge, Attitude and Practices) surveys.
·         Sensitization sessions with stakeholders.
·         Peer wise learning.
·         Preparation of technical design for accessible latrines and bathing places and its implementation.
